Heading out on an RV trip is always an adventure. Whether your trip is a fun-filled time with family or a relaxing weekend getaway, you will experience breathtaking views on your highway expeditions. On occasion, however, the climate may get in your way. A backup plan is beneficial when rain or extreme temperatures keep you from outdoor activities. You may even be after a few new ideas to keep your mind busy–or your kids occupied. Hiking & Fishing
Hiking and fishing may not be unique to RV camping, but they are two favored pastimes of any outdoor enthusiast. A brisk hike to the nearest fishing hole and a couple of hours of peace as you enjoy the scenery are a nice change of pace from everyday life. Take the kids along and make some unforgettable memories. Maybe you’ll capture a photo of that magical moment as they reel in their first fish.
Photography
What better way to enjoy and savor your trip than to capture the special moments on camera? Photography can be a little daunting, but after a few times out with a new camera, you can capture beautiful shots of your family and friends–and the landscape around you.
Geocaching
Geocaching is like a worldwide treasure hunt. People place items into containers and hide them outdoors. Getting involved is as simple as downloading the app and locating a geocache near you. You can sign your name to the log inside so other people know you’ve been there when they discover the same geocache.
Collecting
Collecting is a fun hobby for some. From hat pins to refrigerator magnets to souvenir mugs–there are items to collect everywhere you go. Flowers, leaves, pinecones, and rocks are things many people enjoy adding to their collection when one catches their eye. Two things to note: don’t overdo it, and never take these items from a protected area, such as a national park.
Arts & Crafts
If you collect a few things from nature, try using them to make art. You could also take up crocheting or knitting, painting, drawing, or anything else artsy. Grab a paintbrush or knitting needles and get started.
Journaling & Scrapbooking
Don’t forget to keep a record of your trips by journaling about your daily activities. Some people find it helpful to write things down right after they happen, so don’t forget to pack a notebook and pen. Scrapbooking could also help you remember your journeys and add more sentimental value to your stories.
Cooking & Baking
Are your kids complaining about being bored? Get them involved in the kitchen. Try some new recipes with them, or break out the old favorites. You may have a mess on your hands when it’s all said and done, but at least they’ve had fun, and you have a nice treat to enjoy.
Reading & Storytelling
Reading is an ideal hobby for RV travel. You can pack several books to keep you entertained for hours. If you’re traveling with kids, consider bringing a short series of children’s books or a bedtime favorite. Creative storytelling is also a fun kid activity, especially around a campfire. Start with an opening sentence, then let everyone take turns adding an element to the story.
Board Games & Puzzles
Crosswords, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles are all great ways to occupy your mind while traveling. Pack playing cards and board games for those less-than-ideal-weather days.
Scavenger Hunts
What do you do with some paper, a pen, and a basic knowledge of the plants and animals around your RV campground? You create an entertaining scavenger hunt. If you aren’t exactly the creative type, you can probably find one online. Print it out and start exploring!
